Thank you Jill and Company from the East Valley Bridal Show for giving us the opportunity to come out and showcase not only Honey Bear's but also Catered by MARK's which is some of our speciality foods for those brides and others who may just want something other than BBQ or just need to fancy it up a bit. We had a great time and made alot of new friends, now you all know how much Honey Bear's LOVES their friends. I think at some point or another we fed the entire show - brides, grooms, guests and even the vendors... and you know we enjoyed every minute of it too.

For years now we have been doing more than just BBQ but most people don't know that, so in an effort to expose more of our "speciality" foods we did a split set-up at this event, showcasing half of the booth for Honey Bear's and the other half for Catered by MARK's.

There were many memorable moments at the show, but I think the most outstanding one(s) was whenever a bride and groom would come up to the booth - the brides would be loving on our Catered by MARK's samples (chicken salad on heart shaped crackers, grilled pork tenderloin, chicken bites wrapped in bacon & jalapeno, strawberry walnut salad) while the grooms wanted the BBQ (pulled pork & chicken, hot links, cowbro beans). There were even a couple of grooms who were in serious negotiations trying to get the brides to change their wedding menus, no kidding!

We got alot of exposure and allowing everyone to sample our food was the best part of it all because although a piece of paper or business card may be set aside, they will not soon forget the taste... and because we are dedicated to our name and to our product, if you choose to become part of the Honey Bear's family, we are also dedicated to you.

Hanging w/the Crew from REPO Games (Spike TV)

The producers of "Jersey Shore" are launching a reality show about a topic that's attuned to tough times: repossessed cars. Spike TV, which is part of MTV, is about to begin production of "Repo Games," a quiz show hosted by repo men and starring hapless car owners who fall behind on their payments, according to MTV spokesman David Schwarz. But all is not lost. On this show, they'll have one last chance to save their cars. The dispossessed owner can earn their cars back, fully paid, if they correctly answer three out of five trivia questions. "They're fun questions, seemingly easy questions, the stuff that the majority of people can answer," he said. "We're not trying to stump people with impossible questions." For example, they might have to identify state capitals, said Schwarz. But if they don't get three questions right, it's off to the impound yard. "It's a show with real stakes involved," he said.

"Repo Games" is actually hosted by real repo men who snatch cars for a living, not actors, said Schwarz. The show won't just be about people who are too broke to make their car payments, he said. It will involve a cross-section of cars and people, including rich owners with luxury cars who space out on making payments. "People who have had their car repossessed range from Paris Hilton to your average Joe," he said. Schwarz said the show is currently in production and will air this spring.

NOW I KNOW YOU ARE ALL DYING TO KNOW HOW IN THE WORLD DID HONEY BEAR'S GET HOOKED UP WITH THIS REALITY TV SHOW... Well nothing as exciting as getting any of the Honey Bear's vans repo (Yet, NOT! ~ Haha!) but the production crew stopped in last week to have lunch on a recommendation from a Honey Bear's Fan (Big SHOT OUT to that customer, we love you!) and started talking with Mark and Mark about the business and general stuff and then they asked if they could come back and shoot some scenes for one of their upcoming shows. Like we were gonna say NO!

I believe the show that includes the Honey Bear's scenes will air sometime in mid April so keep an eye out for us and holler back if you happen to catch it...

APS Tribute to Diverse Businesses

APS will be paying tribute to a few of the many successful relationships they have with diverse businesses here in the valley. These partnerships contribute to the success of APS' supplier diversity efforts and Honey Bear's has been selected. Yesterday a crew from APS came out to our Tempe store and tape a video vignette about Mark, Gary and Honey Bear's.

Mark & Gary are to be recognize for their contributions to the success of this program at a luncheon in late July at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel. The event will be hosted by Don Brandt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of APS as an excellent opportunity to bring diverse business CEO's together with the APS management teams that utilize their products and services for an invigorating exchange of information, ideas and insights.

This dynamic convergence of diverse suppliers, middle and executive management and valued community partners will enable APS to continue builidng on the valuable partnerships they have already built with diverse suppliers such as Honey Bear's and reap future benefits in growth and development for all.

A Weekend of Events

Honey Bear's pulled off another fantastic weekend, it was filled with caterings and special events. On Friday the 16th we set up our booth out at the 27th Annual Glendale Jazz & Blues Festival and were out there Saturday and Sunday grilling up some of Arizona's favorite BBQ meals (rib tips; pork, beef & chicken sandwiches; our cowbro beans, cole slaw, potato salad...). Also on Friday night we had a booth set up in Ahwatukee at Kyrene Del Milenio Elementary School helping them with their school fundraiser. Here we sold BBQ dinners: pork & chicken sandwiches; hamburgers & hotdogs; veggie burgers; cowbro beans (What's BBQ dinner without the BBQ beans?) and cookies. Our 3rd event on Friday evening was the board meeting for Scottsdale's Valley Field Riding & Polo Club where we did a full service catering for them. Their menu included: pork & chickens sandwiches; cole slaw, potato salad, cowbro beans & corn-on-the-cob; platters of watermelon; and to top it all off with desserts peach cobbler & ice cream. So after that event filled night we sent our loyal staff home to rest for a few hours only to return bright and early Saturday for another full day of events. We were ready on Saturday for the crowds at the Jazz & Blues Festival and we weren't disappointed. They were ready to eat and we were ready to serve up that BBQ.

Then in partnership with Phoenix's Metro Auto Auction we catered out at Firebird International Raceway (in Chandler by Wild Horse Pass) for Hope Kids, donating the food and our full service catering staff. Then finishing off the weekend on Sunday, we catered to the Jazz & Blues crowd until 6PM; catered the 2nd event for Hope Kids; and did a full service event for First Baptist Church in Sun Lakes for their pastors retirement.

Guadalupe Lowrider Car Show

We set up a vendor booth @ the Guadalupe Lowrider Car Show today grilling up fresh some of those HB favorites while checking out the hydraulic action with rear bumpers kissing the ground, and headlights reaching for the sky. There were even some kiddie bikes tricked out! The Guadalupe streets were packed with Street Kings, Intruders and Majestics - just a few of the car clubs represented today at the greatest free lowrider car show in the Valley.

We got to take home the left overs.... :-) Mark Smith and his family has been friends of ours for over 16 years. HB BBQ Served on Air Force One

A long time friend (family member) of ours, Doc of Doc's Artisan Ice Creams, invited us this morning to come out and see up close President Obama's plane "Air Force One."

After the visit Mark was able to go back and deliver fresh from our grills our Baby Back Ribs, BBQ Chicken Wings, Cowbro Beans and Cole Slaw.

We were informed that the food did make it unto Air Force One and would be served. We are hopeful that the President and his family will be able to taste some...

A warm family atmosphere and the mouth-watering smell of barbecued ribs greets patrons as they walk through the door at Honey Bear's BBQ.

Honey Bear's BBQ is well known for the secret Tennessee barbecue flavors and sauces which have been handed down through generations for over 50 years to Gary Clark and Mark Smith.

Childhood friends and business partners Mark Smith and Gary Clark, grew up together in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They came to Scottsdale Community College in 1980 to play football and get their degrees in business. Catering college affairs to cover their expenses, their barbecues gained immense popularity. Brought to a turning point in their lives, the partners bought a van and portable barbecue pit and started an on-site catering business all over the Phoenix area.

In 1986, at the age of 24, they opened their first Honey Bear’s restaurant on East Van Buren Street. It immediately received the New Times Best of Phoenix Award, a distinction it has been awarded every year since. By the time they opened their second restaurant on North Central Avenue in January of 1998, their catering business had expanded so much that they had to move many of the catering preparations to a nearby commissary. It would take them six years later, July 2004, to open their 3rd restaurant located in Tempe at Priest and Elliot. By now they had grown from a single truck to three restaurants, nine delivery trucks and 70 plus employees.

After 20 years, they have perfected not only their sauce but the go-withs as well. Well known for the secret Tennessee barbecue flavors and sauces, unlike any that can be found in Arizona. A restaurant that has become one of the most talked about BBQ restaurants in Arizona, one that has changed the way Arizonians eat BBQ. . .

This year's readers' favorite barbecue spot guarantees, "You don't need no teeth to eat our meat." In Honey Bear's BBQ's 50-year-old family recipe, sauces are infused with Tennessee flavor. Mark Smith and Gary Clark went to Scottsdale Community College in the '80s to play football. To pay their expenses, they started catering for college functions. Sacramento Family Finds Honey Bear's

Today during our lunch hour at the Tempe location, a family of six from Sacramento stop in for lunch and shared with us that they were vacationing in Texas and had seen the video of Honey Bear's on the Regis and Kelly show this past Friday and that they decided then that on their way back home to California they were going to find us, and they did. What an awesome story . . .

Honey Bear's BBQ another finalist in 'Regis & Kelly' contest

Phoenix restaurants' grilled dishes are hotter than the weather. The baby back ribs with Honey Bear BBQ sauce from Honey Bear's BBQ is the third Phoenix area finalist on the national hometown grilling contest sponsored by the “Live with Regis & Kelly!” show.

On Friday, June 26, chef Bobby Fitzgerald of White Chocolate Grill in Scottsdale prepared his winning grilled fish recipe, Citrus Soy Glazed Salmon, live on the show. Earlier this summer, Joe's Real BBQ in Gilbert was a finalist in the beef brisket category.

Honey Bear's is competing against four other national barbecue rib recipes in the category. The winner will be determined by voting on the show's Web site. Voting ends at 7 a.m. Sunday, July 5. The winner will be announced on the show Tuesday, July 7.

On Friday, July 10, the winner will appear live on the show in New York to cook his or her dish. At the end of the summer, winners of each barbecue category compete against each other to be named “Ultimate Hometown” winner.

Honey Bear's BBQ is owned by long-time friends Mark Smith and Gary Clark. The duo started their business in 1980 as a way to get by in college. Six years later, the popularity of their southern-style barbecue sauce allowed the then 24-year-olds to open the first Honey Bear's BBQ at 5012 E. Van Buren St. in Phoenix. Since then, they added restaurants at 2824 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, and 7670 S. Priest Drive, Tempe.

In a short tape aired Friday, July 3, on “Regis and Kelly,” Smith touts Honey Bears as “A place where you don't need no teeth to eat our meat.”

Honey Bear's barbecue sauce comes from a “recipe that has been handed down from our family in Tennessee for over 50 years,” Smith says. “We use a special seasoning, and we use a little bit of tanginess that brings out all the Tennessee flavors of our baby back ribs.”

Honey Bear's makes it to the Final Round

Early this morning we got a call from a friend who lives in California but is vacationing in Florida to tell us that he had just saw Mark on television talking about how to grill baby back ribs. Now we are in Montana for a few days to celebrate and do a 4th of July BBQ. We were totally surprised because no one from the Regis & Kelly show had even notified us that our video had been accepted and that we were in the final 5. Needless to say we are super excited! We all grabbed our laptops and cell phones and start spreading the word via facebook, twitter, text messaging, phone calls, blogging, etc. Honey Bear's had made it to the final round of the Live with Regis and Kelly Ultimate Hometown Grill Off. We were askng everyone to spread the word and to get online and cast their votes for Honey Bear's. The deadline to vote is Sunday morning at 10am EST and we need as many family, friends, fans to help us win this final round.

Nominated Best Baby Ribs

On this past Tuesday, June 16th, we received a call from a production staff member from the LIVE! with Regis & Kelly show notifying us that Honey Bear's had been nominated as having the Best Baby Back Ribs thus entering us into their Ultimate Hometown Grill Off contest. In order to accept the nomination we had to submit to them via email describing in detail how we prepare and cook our BB Ribs, this being the 1st round of the contest. She then told us that there was one catch, we had to submit the email by 12 noon Wednesday, the very next day... We did it!

If the email was approved by the judges, we would be notified and then have to submit a 1 minute video telling why our Back Back's are the best (round 2). I received an urgent message from the staff member on Thursday notifying us that our email had been approved and that the video needed to be submitted by 3PM EST this coming Monday, June 22nd. Yesterday, Friday 6/19, we shot the video and it is being edited now and should be ready today or tomorrow at the latest. Thanks Matt!

So the purpose of this post, as well as our Facebook and Twitter signup is to get the message out that Honey Bear's may have an opportunity to appear Live on Live! with Regis and Kelly and we will need all of our family, friends, fans, etc. to be prepared to help us win Round # 3 which will be the voting process.

We will get the video in and then as soon as we hear if the video has been accepted by the judges we will be letting everyone know the dates & times & how to vote for Honey Bear's BBQ. We love all of you out there and know that each of you will play a hugh part in sending Mark to New York....
